Emma Mattress Review (2019 Model) | Engineer Tested

Emma is an international mattress and sleep accessory company. Founded in Frankfurt, Germany, the company now operates across five continents. Emma established a presence in the U.S. with the Emma Original Mattress, a reasonably priced foam bed that’s conforming yet breathable. This mattress was previously known as the ComfortAdapt All-Foam Mattress.

The Emma Original features a four-layer construction beginning with a memory foam comfort layer. The mattress is backed by Emma’s lengthy 365-night sleep trial.

Emma’s mattress line also features a hybrid model at a slightly higher price-point. The Emma Original Hybrid is slightly firmer and contains 8 inches of zoned pocketed coils for targeted support and improved airflow.

We’ll break down the Emma Original in detail, outlining the bed’s materials, construction, price, and performance, including the results from our extensive testing.

Today I’ll be exploring the original all-foam mattress from European bedding brand Emma. Designed by German engineers, this bed’s special combo of foams and nifty zoned support channels seems likely to provide an all-encompassing sleeping experience that’s both supportive and luxuriously soft.

But is the Emma mattress really all it’s cracked up to be? I won’t know until I put it through my series of tried-and-true tests, which should not only tell me if this bed is worth the hype, but whether or not it could be the perfect bed for you! From firmness level to motion control, breathability to bounce, here’s all you need to know about the original Emma mattress.

Emma Original Mattress Review Breakdown

The Original is Emma’s foam model. It features a breathable polyester blend cover with handle straps on the sides to make moving the mattress easier.

The comfort system consists of two distinct layers. The top layer is 1.5 inches of contouring memory foam that hugs the body. The second layer is 1.5 inches of polyfoam designed to provide additional contouring and resilience. Both of the comfort layers feature Emma’s ParticleCool infusion engineered for temperature regulation.

A 3-inch layer of transitional polyfoam helps reinforce the comfort system. A final 5-inch layer of firm polyfoam provides stable support and improves the durability of the bed.

The four layers of the Emma Original sit 11 inches tall and create a medium (5) feel. All of the foams are CertiPUR-US certified, indicating they’re free of certain potentially harmful substances, including heavy metals, formaldehyde, and phthalates.

Pros

  • The best thing about working at Emma is the empowerment to take ownership of our own work.
  • There’s a lot of ownership and autonomy with my work even though I’m just an intern. I’m able to make decisions without having to consult with my team lead first which makes tasks and projects move along quicker than in a traditional/hierarchical workplace.
  • The people and culture
  • Ownership and freedom to express and execute your ideas. Exposure to various fields of learning which allows for constant growth and development.
  • The overall work environment and atmosphere
  • A flat hierarchy, the freedom to own your projects and decisions, and the room and potential for growth

    Cons

  • Really steep learning curve and nothing is spoon-fed, so it might not be for everyone.
  • Workload
  • Small team capacity so expects some overlaps with job areas and bigger responsibilities from day 1
  • Not directly related to work responsibilities but more of the causes of the pandemic and working online. It has definitely brought upon some form of challenges in the communication aspect
  • Workload and fast pace may be challenging
